Weight grades by category
By default a class average is total points earned over total points possible. Weighted categories change that. Each category gets its own percent, and the categories blend by their weights.
Steps
- In the rail, open Classes. Click Gradebook, then open the class.
- Find Grading categories. Type up to four category names, each with a Weight. For example, Homework 30, Quizzes 20, Tests 50.
- Click Save weights. The class page now says Weighted grading with your categories.
- When you add an assignment, the Category box becomes a menu. Pick the category it belongs to.
Good to know
- Weights do not have to add up to 100. They are used as shares of the total.
- A category with nothing graded yet drops out, and the others share its weight. Early in the term one quiz will not skew the grade.
- An assignment joins a category by name, and capital letters do not matter. In weighted mode, an assignment with no matching category does not count. Give it a category to include it.
- To go back to plain points, clear every category row and click Save weights.
- Excused and Incomplete scores stay out of every category. Missing counts as zero.
