No tournament plan survives first contact with weather. What separates good directors from great ones is the plan for weather, not the plan without it.
Delay triggers
- Lightning within 8 miles - 30 minute field clear
- Heat index over 100F - mandatory water breaks, shortened games
- Fog reducing visibility - pause outdoor play
- Sustained winds over 30mph - pause volleyball outdoors
Communication protocol
- Director hits the "weather hold" button in the tournament app
- SMS goes out to every team captain with a hold message
- Public schedule page shows "Weather hold - next update at X:XX"
- Director re-publishes revised schedule when play resumes
Shortened formats
If you lose 90 minutes, cut pool play to 3 rounds instead of 4, or shorten game length to 20 minutes. The scheduler should regenerate the timeline automatically.
