College Ultimate Sectionals & Regionals: A Bid-Chase Operations Guide
Running College Sectionals or Regionals means chasing bids. Here's the 2026 operations guide - seeding, schedule, and USAU paperwork.
College Ultimate postseason events carry more weight per point than almost any other tournament. A single universe point at Regionals can move a bid to Nationals. Your operations have to match that intensity.
USAU paperwork and seeding are non-negotiable
Sanctioning paperwork is due 6 weeks out. Seeding is published 2 weeks out based on USAU rating plus any regional adjustments. Publish the seeding and let teams flag errors - don't discover them on Saturday.
Format: power pools into championship bracket
Most College postseason events run power pools (top 8 seeds split across two pools) with consolation and championship brackets. Your scheduler has to handle bracket re-seeding based on pool standings without you manually moving teams.
Bid-chase scenarios
Teams chasing a Regionals or Nationals bid need to know exactly what outcome gets them in. Publish the bracket scenarios in advance: "If #3 wins their 2nd-round game and #2 loses in pool play, #3 clinches the last bid to Regionals." Clarity here is the difference between a great event and an angry coaches' meeting.
Live brackets and SMS to captains
Parents, alumni, and scouts follow College Ultimate through live brackets. A public tournament URL with automatic updates means you are not fielding refresh requests all weekend. Captain SMS handles the on-field coordination.
Spirit scores still count
USAU still collects Spirit at the college level. Tournament directors at Sectionals and Regionals need the same Spirit tooling as a Club event - publish the running leaderboard and share it with USAU at the end of the weekend.
