Building Your First Seat Map Without a CAD Degree
A step-by-step guide for community venue organizers to build an accurate, buyer-friendly interactive seat map鈥攏o technical drawing experience required.
You don't need AutoCAD or a graphics background to create a seat map that works. You need a tape measure, some patience, and a clear plan.
Step 1: Measure Your Space
Grab a 25-foot retractable tape measure and a notepad. Record the overall width and depth of your seating area, distance from the front row to the stage edge, aisle widths, row depth (front of one row to the next), and section widths. Note any unusual features: curved rows, balcony overhangs, tech booth areas.
Draw a simple bird's-eye sketch as you go. Label every dimension. Take photos of each section for reference later. If your venue has architectural drawings, start there鈥攂ut verify against the actual room since renovations may have changed things.
Step 2: Count and Number Every Seat
Walk every row and count physically. A map with 198 seats when you have 200 causes confusion on busy nights.
Numbering tips: Be consistent鈥攊f Row A starts with Seat 1 on the left, every row should. Account for gaps at aisles and decide whether to skip numbers or not. For a 200-seat house, sequential numbering is usually simpler than odd/even splits.
Step 3: Define Sections and Tiers
Divide seating into logical sections: front (rows A鈥揇, premium), middle (rows E鈥揌, mid-tier), rear (rows I鈥揕, value), and sides if applicable. Two to three pricing tiers is enough for most community venues鈥攎ore than four creates decision fatigue.
Color-code tiers on your sketch. You'll replicate these in the digital map.
Step 4: Document Accessible Seating

Step 5: Choose Your Map-Building Approach
Built-in editor: Some ticketing platforms offer drag-and-drop builders. Easiest path鈥攏o external tools, changes go live immediately. May have limitations for complex layouts.
External drawing + import: Build the visual in a free tool (Google Drawings for simple layouts, Figma for curves and complex arrangements, LibreOffice Draw for desktop SVG export), then upload. More control, more work.
Step 6: Build Digitally
Follow this sequence regardless of tool:
- Place the stage at the top. Label it clearly.
- Build front-center first. Place each row seat by seat, matching measurements.
- Work outward. Side sections, then middle and rear. Balcony as a separate section.
- Space evenly. Use your measured dimensions鈥攄on't eyeball it.
- Add aisles. Clear gaps where aisles exist help buyers orient themselves.
- Label rows and seat numbers. Row letters always visible; seat numbers on hover/tap.
- Apply tier colors. Visually distinct and accessible (no sole reliance on red/green).
- Mark accessible seats. Use the international accessibility symbol.
Step 7: Test Ruthlessly
Desktop: Zoom, click individual seats, check tooltips (row, number, section, price).
Mobile: Pinch-to-zoom, tap without accidentally selecting neighbors, readable text. Mobile is where most problems surface鈥攖est on at least two phones.
In-venue: Buy test tickets for specific seats, then physically sit in them. Does the map match reality?
Fresh eyes: Have someone who's never been to your venue buy a ticket using the map. Watch where they hesitate鈥攖hat's your fix list.
Step 8: Plan for Changes
Your seat map isn't a one-time project. Save each configuration with a descriptive name and date. When your stage layout changes (thrust vs. proscenium, expanded orchestra pit, blocked sections for production needs), you'll want to reload an existing map rather than rebuild from scratch.
Update the map before tickets go on sale for any event with a different room setup. If your venue hosts outside groups who bring their own staging, build and save their configurations too鈥攖hey'll thank you next year.
