After the drive: thank, report, and set up next year

The drive is over and the tab is begging to be closed. Spend one more hour now and next year starts ahead instead of from scratch.

When a drive ends, the natural instinct is to close the tab and exhale. Resist it for one hour. The hour right after a drive closes is worth far more than any hour during it, because it is when you turn a one time result into something you can repeat. Three things, in order.

1. Thank everyone, and be specific about the number

Post the final total where the people who gave will see it. Not a vague "thank you for your support," but the real figure: "Together we raised $4,120 for new uniforms." A donor who sees the result they helped create is the donor who gives again next year without being asked twice. Name the students who shared the most, thank the families, and if a business chipped in, thank them by name. Specific gratitude is the cheapest marketing you will ever run.

2. Report the result to the people who set your goal

Someone approved this drive: a booster board, a principal, an athletic director. Send them one clean sentence with the number and what it buys. "We raised $4,120, which covers all twenty uniforms with $300 left for the banquet." That sentence is what gets you a bigger goal and fewer questions next time. A drive that reports its win is treated very differently from one that just quietly stops.

3. Write down what worked, while it is still fresh

You will not remember this in ten months, so spend three lines on it now. Which channel brought the most gifts, the group text or the posted link. How many students actually shared their page. What the first week number was, because that is the best predictor you have for next year. Keep it somewhere you will find it when you open the next drive.

Next year is a copy, not a rebuild

This is the part people miss. Your roster, your story, your cover photo, and your goal framing are all still here. Next year's drive is not a blank form, it is last year's drive with the numbers refreshed and a new end date. The group that reports its win and saves its notes does not start over. It starts ahead, and it usually raises more, because momentum is the one thing a fundraiser cannot buy but can absolutely keep.

The drive that ends with a thank you and a number is the drive that is easy to run again.
